Coffee

About 1,600,000,000 cups of coffee are consumed every day around the world. Billions of people rely on it as part of their daily routines. And yet, very few people are aware of the Muslim origins of this ubiquitous drink.

According to the historical record, in the 1400s coffee became a very popular drink among Muslims in Yemen, in the southern Arabian Peninsula. Legend goes that a shepherd (some say in Yemen, some say in Ethiopia) noticed that his goats became very energetic and jumpy when they ate beans from a particular tree. He had the courage to try them himself, noticing they gave him an energy boost. Over time, the tradition of roasting the beans and immersing them in water to create a sour yet powerful drink developed, and thus, coffee was born.

Regardless of whether or not the story of the shepherd ever really happened, coffee found its way from the highlands of Yemen to the rest of the Ottoman Empire, the premier Muslim empire of the 15th century. Coffeehouses specializing in the new drink began to spring up in all the major cities of the Muslim world: Cairo, Istanbul, Damascus, Baghdad. From the Muslim world, the drink found its way into Europe through the great merchant city of Venice. Although it was at first denounced as the “Muslim drink” by Catholic authorities, coffee became a part of European culture. The coffeehouses of the 1600s was where philosophers met and discussed issues such as the rights of man, the role of government, and democracy. These discussions over coffee spawned what became the Enlightenment, one of the most powerful intellectual movements of the modern world.

From a Yemeni/Ethiopian shepherd to shaping European political thought to over 1 billion cups per day, this Muslim innovation is one of the most important inventions of human history.

The following is an edited version of the notes prepared by Maliha Abidi during the lecture. It also includes some points from a lecture delivered by Alimah Sobia Qasim (a student of the speaker) at a summer program in Karachi called Footsteps.

UAE: Entire soccer team converts to Islam due to its peace and kindness

An entire football team of young Cameroonian football players have declared their conversion to Islam after spending two months at a football training camp in the United Arab Emirates.

A total of twenty-three players in their twenties who came as part of a program run by a football academy for poor, homeless and orphaned youngsters in Cameroon, openly read out their testimony of faith at the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) in Dubai.

Javeed Khateeb, senior religious adviser at IACAD, told The National, “It is amazing that at an age when most people just want to play and have fun, these young men were searching for faith and enlightenment.”

It was reported that the players and coaches decided to accept Islam for various reasons, including the peace they felt in the religion and the kindness of Muslims they came across during their stay in the country.

“They were very impressed with the way Muslims behaved, but mostly they were impressed by the kindness and respect they received. These are poor young men and they were embraced like brothers,” Khateeb said.

“We spent two separate sessions, which were about a full day each, talking about Islam and answering all their questions and alleviating any doubts,” Khateeb added.

“We wanted to make sure they had proper understanding of Islam. Many of their questions were about halal and haram, consuming alcohol, and how the prophet Jesus is portrayed in Islam.”

All but two visiting footballers decided to convert to Islam during their visit to IACAD on Thursday before returning to Cameroon on Saturday, although the remaining two players asked for more information before they made up their minds, Khateeb said.

In this blessed month of Ramadhan, we have now come to the grand finale – the last ten days of Ramadhan that are regarded as the “cream” of Ramadhan. In it is a night that Qur’an tells us is better than 1000 months (yes, months…not days!)

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“There has come to you Ramadaan, a blessed month which Allah has enjoined you to fast, during which the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the rebellious devils are chained up. In it there is a night which is better than a thousand months, and whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.” (Hadith Narrated by An-Nasaa’i, 2106; Ahmad, Sahih At-Targheeb, 999.)

Boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) are big news in 2014. If Scarlett Johansson’s Sodastream fiasco didn’t grab your attention, perhaps the American Studies Association’s boycott of Israeli universities did, or Netanyahu’s increasing talk of million-dollar PR campaigns, legal offensives and diplomacy efforts to counter the BDS threat. Opinion pages are filled with debate, John Kerry has warned Israel that it could be facing a delegitimization campaign “on steroids” and voices from all sides are speculating that a boycott movement against Israel could be about to break into the mainstream.

But what would that actually mean in supermarkets and shopping baskets? The BDS campaign covers all Israeli products: It’s a broad tactic aimed to pressure the state itself to change. But it also reserves a special focus for companies that are actually involved in — and make hefty profits from — occupation policies. These organizations may be forced to pay attention to the boycott very soon — and they may not be the ones you’d expect.

Xherdan Shaqiri
The 22-year-old Xherdan Shaqiri will represent the Swiss national team during Brazil 2014 World Cup. Born in Yugoslavia from Albanian origin, the Muslim footballer plays as a midfielder for Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga.
Since his breakthrough into Basel’s first team, the left-footed midfielder has drawn widespread praise for his speed, both on and off the ball.
Shaqiri won the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League title with Bayern in late May, as well as the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal title, making him one of the Bayern Munich players to have won the treble.
Moussa Sissoko
The 24-year-old Muslim footballer, who hails from a Malian family, will be playing for the French squad as a midfielder in World Cup 2014.
With 17 international caps, the own playing style French Muslim has started playing football at a very young age, joining Toulouse club’s first team at the age of 17.
In October 2009, Sissoko played his first international match between France and Faroe Islands. By 2013, the 188-cm Muslim midfielder has signed in for Newcastle.
Marouane Fellaini
The Belgian midfielder was born in November 1987.
Fellaini, who hails from Moroccan family, has signed for Everton in 2008, moving to Manchester United in 2013 in a deal worth £27.5 million.
The Manchester United Muslim footballer played his first international match between Belgium and Czech Republic in February 2007.
The 194-cm midfielder has a history of 50 international caps, scoring 8 international goals.
Wakaso Mubarak
Widely known as Wakaso, the Ghanina professional footballer, who was born in July 1990, plays for the Russian FC Rubin Kazan and the Ghana national football team.
The Ghanaian midfielder has played his first international match in October 2012. Wakaso has made 17 international caps, recording 7 international goals.
Between 2008-2011, the Ghanaian footballer has been playing for Spain’s Elche. After moving to Villarreal’s team in 2011, the youngster played a number of La Liga games for the club’s first team.
In 2013, Wakaso’s moving to the Russian club Rubin Kazan made him one of the Ghanaian squad’s key players who are listed for the World Cup 2014.
Bacary Sagna
The Muslim Senegalese footballer, who was born in Sens in February 1983, played hi first international match in 2007 between Slovakia and France.
At the age of 14, the Muslim player joined Auxerre where he developed his skills as a forward. Meanwhile, he was moved to fill in at right-back, dubbed as the best right-back by his fellow players in 2006 and 2007.
The French Defender has joined Arsenal in 2007, signing a £7-million contract.
With 41 international caps, the 178-cm midfielder will play for the French squad in World Cup 2014.
Vincent Aboubakar
Young as he might be, 22-year-old Muslim footballer Vincent Aboubakar is expected to be one of the best Cameroonian players in history. The Cameroonian striker plays for French club Lorient in Ligue 1. He joined the national first team at the age of 18 when he was named to the Cameroon 23-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
